Sleeper and Snake - Junction and High LP
This long awaited debut release from Sleeper and Snake finds the two long time bandmates deconstructing melody, harmony and genre tropes weaving crude rhythm boxes, organ and rudimentary instruments into a minimal concoction that sits somewhere between outsider folk and Riley-esque synth and sax ragas but ultimately only comparable to work released by both of them in various guises.
Avant country that manages to be playful, witty, world weary yet razor sharp Junction & High is as beautiful as it is unsettling.
Highly recommended by Lulu's.
Hank Wood & The Hammerheads - 2019 Cassingle CS
Let’s hear what Hank Wood & The Hammerheads have to say... These little beauties feel like they were written not long after their sick 2018 album where there was a shift between a hyper frantic Crampsè can’t-stop-a-jitterin’ approach of their earlier tunes to a stripped back keep on frickin’ truckin’ and anchored by melancholia sound that beckons you to see the teeth and tears baring soul of the band a little more, which is just as buzzed out in its own way. There’s a definite Brit-something feel to one of these tracks (thanks to the slicked guitar styling of NYC surf loving flower Logan) which hurts so good. At the end of the day you’re still getting the short, energetic punk songs that the band is adored for - but it’s still lonely in this world and Hank Wood is right there with ya, punk.
MIKAN MUKKU - 缶 / ちんダン 7"
Lulu's has been obsessed with these two tracks ever since first hearing them in terrible quality uploaded to some nerdy blogspot years ago. Possibly THE grail of underground Japanese synth-pop, the only two tracks the Mikan Mukku ever produced were limited to two different comp flexis given away at shows in Tokyo around 1986. Both are unbelievably unique in their own ways, equal amounts playful and insidious, a juxtaposition that has come to define this scene. Bitter Lake have once again smashed it out of the park with their presentation, which it done with the utmost care and respect to the material. Limited to 500 copies worldwide.
J. MCFARLANE REALITY GUEST - TA DA LP
The evolution/ascension of JMF’s previous kinda band, kinda solo project “Hot Topic”; Julia McFarlane’s Reality Guest feels like the culmination of the years she spent pushing Twerps in new, interesting directions. Feeling at times akin to some kind of early 80s minimal UK DIY pop project, in reality Reality Guest are playing on a plane of their own. Jules has always had the knack for a magic chord progression, a just-right wonk, a near-perfect melody. She has always been one of Australia’s greatest songwriters, Ta Da is the unburdened proof.
One of the best Australian albums in recent years, and an absolute delight in every sense.
DIASTEREOMER - IGNITION ADVANCER LP
Unbelievable sexy darkwave from the deep Tokyo underground. Reissued with the utmost care and love by NY's Bitter Lake Recordings. Limited to a once off pressing of 350 worldwide, Lulu's have the very last copies available anywhere. Now is your chance.
