MOM GALLERY NEWS

The first half of 2024 has been amazing, thanks to all that continue to come down and support the gallery, lulus and all the artists that have put on shows so far.

We just wrapped up 'papery' A group exhibition curated by Lilly Skipper and Aaron Ashwood. The show was great and every artist that contributed did amazing work, hope some of you got to see it!

Next up we have Chucky Edge, you may have heard the name, or even seen him lurking around the CBD over the last 10 years taking snaps and getting to know the many interesting characters that fill its streets. The show is titled 'The Bottom End' and opens this Friday from 5:30.

Lots to come for the rest of the year so keep your eyes peeled and your body warm.
big love

TH BLISKS - "ELIXA" LP (Efficient Space)
Th Blisks have chosen an appropriate title for their second album, Elixa. This lovely dose of dubbed out chill beats sounds like a druggy cup of green tea; plenty fresh and a bit bitter to make ya grow. Plenty of wobbed bass and crispy hats for the synths to float over like a Barry Windham suplex in slow motion. Occasional Orion-esque guitar loops help to lull you into a hypnotized mindzone and their collective voices sweep throughout, behaving more like another spectral instrument than a vehicle for lyrical delivery. And for the discerning listener there's some cheeky N.O.Ds to Memphis/Houston rap tapes. Th Blisks have ground this concoction into something that might be best imbibed with the visual presence of natural beauty or maybe the vivid memory or imagining of such things behind closed eyelids. It's a contemplative platter. One, that if listened to in the right setting, will feel like it was made just for you at just the right time; reminding you to be decent.

DAVE - "DAVE II" CS (Anti Fade Records)
Dave II is such an interesting treat and we're thankful for it. The first thing that jumped out is the Library Music feel of the keyboard tones, the kind of thing that some mostly-forgotten 70's Italiano heart throb could charm a mysterious femme fatale or evade police vehicles in an Alfa Romeo to. This kind of nostalgic feeling bleeds into the other tracks, feeling like a compilation of exploitation flick soundtracks. Genre-wise, Dave explores a lot; intoxicated jazzy lounge sessions, spaced out sci-fi landing gear, Krautrock psych haze, pocketed deep beats and proper slicked back pomade grooves. Either way it doesn't sound like something that was recorded this decade, century, or even on this planet. If you like old European B movies you should get a real kick out of the sounds on this one.

SVRAOZ – “SACRAMENTS OF EVIL” CS (Pale Ghoul Recordings)
Indonesian speed black witching metal!! Relics of the almighty Bathory, Sodom, early Slayer and a touch of Mercyful Fate are sat upon this altar, debauched in darkness and incinerated in hotted flames. Svraoz have opted not to completely sever their rock’n’roll roots, the gleaming light of the axe blade shines brightly (think Japan’s Sabbat) so it pairs well with alcohol and nudity. For all the maniacs who dig such underground invocations, we implore thee to turn it up loud enough to wake the recently deceased and “Don't die too soon and become obsolete!!!”

THE JUDGES – “GUNS” 7” (Anti Fade Records)
Addicted to rock n roll, guitar sound, you don't want to bow and scrape to make the nice people at your job comfortable with the rings under your eyes and the scabs on your knuckles and the vacant look that hits you every time someone offers a recommendation on the latest streaming comedy drama, you don't want to be near normal people and hear normal people discuss fracking and voting and contributing consensus opinions and smell normal peoples supermarket wafer stench and see normal people gobbling normal food because normal people do not addict to rock n roll, but here is testament, YOU ARE NOT ALONE, Judges are here to deliver you relief from the tedium of the modern world with RAW POWER, GUITAR OVERDOSE, this is the sound you have dreamed of, let them pass JUDGEMENT on you, YOU ARE GUILTY AS CHARGED, your sentence is LOUDER, FASTER, LOUD&FAST!!!!!! If Stooges are your friend, Judges are your friend. We love this band at Lulu's and recommend!

EXTORTION – “THREATS” 7” (15.1.19)
Controlled Chaos at its finest. Threats is ruthlessly aggressive, attention deficit hyperactivity. 15 songs in eight and a half minutes. There’s no time to wander or stray, blink or sneeze. The constriction ensnares without rest and any moment of apparent respite is a tease to choke you tighter again until the lights go out. It’s clear that Extortion delight in these situations. Most songs don’t crack the thirty second mark. It’s a blitz they get off on.
The last time I saw them play live was better than the last time I saw Napalm Death. The first few times I saw Extortion I think at least one Napalm Death shirt was adorned. At one show an older man lay on the ground pleading for people to jump on his neck. He ripped the collar of my favourite tee and in hindsight I wish I’d taken him up on the offer.
Extortion became the masters in their domain and their fans know it, eagerly awaiting the morsels without worry for a dissatisfied appetite. You wouldn’t be able to chew much more with the few teeth they left in your head anyway. Suck it through a straw. Extortion is the real deal.

RESPUESTA ALTERNATIVA - “DEL SILENCIO” LP (Left Ear Records)
Freaky new age funkadelica left in a shoebox for decades, Left Ear Records have unearthed another obscurity for the more curious groovers. Bossanova bass synth funk and some surprisingly tense percussion lay sandy foundations for this island dance hypnosis as tru crystal shop keys and woo-y flourishes help hoist the  sails to sunny shores upon high. It really is quite a unique, crazy mixture of Balearic beach sound meets dungeon synth sparse weirdness. Whether fresh fruit cocktails or +200 mana buffs are your thing or not, Respuesta Alternativa’s Del Silencio is something you to hear for yourself to discover the secret realm hidden in that shoe box all these years.
