JENN PELLEY: In 1979, the Raincoats didn’t work other jobs. Three of four members lived in squats and so paid no rent. “We lived on fresh air,” bassist and vocalist Gina Birch once told me. Home was not very comfortable, so squatters spent more time at the squat cafés and tea rooms (hangovers from the hippie era) where you could buy brown rice, vegetables, and sarsaparilla for a few pennies; at charity shops, you could find a new wardrobe. “You could dress for virtually no money,” Gina says. “You could eat very cheaply or not at all.” They could afford to dedicate themselves to art. The quasi-legal nature of squatting gave the parameters of their lives—and indeed The Raincoats—a naturally anarchic edge. “It was a homemade, chaotic sound,” Gina says. “The way we lived seeped in.” The Raincoats is—in its way—music of, for, and about the margins. Vocalist and guitarist Ana da Silva told one zine, “We’re full-time punks.”
