LAURENCE HUNT: This is Coltrane playing classic, melodic tunes, including popular tunes of the era. How well does he do it? Impeccably. This is one of my most listened-to albums. I confess that on many mellow days, I just re-start the disc rather than insert another one. I for one can listen to these pieces over and over again. It's not his most leading edge work, but it is rich, sumptuous, subtle, comfortable entertainment. Like having a second - or third - slice of chocolate cake.
