HIEROPHANTS - SPITTING OUT MOONLIGHT

Lulu's:
The return of patient zero of the Geelong invasion/infection; it all comes back to Hierophants. Though her members have arguably found greater “success” post-’phants (helming acts such as Parsnip, Orb, Ausmuteants, Traffik Island, School Damage et al.), this band had always held a special place in the hearts of certain members of the LuCru; a band even more than the sum of it’s parts (and, considering those parts, that’s really something).
A constantly evolving, criminally under-documented outfit for its entire existence, Spitting Out Moonlight does some to capture the direction Hierophants were heading into late into her life. The distinctive pop’n’jerk is still there, but some of the bubblegum sheen has worn back. Adulthood has arrived baby, and it’s not as simple as it had all appeared. The songs are darker, more reflective, more complicated, messier. They seem tired.
Hopefully Spitting Out Moonlight means we’ll see more of Heirophants into the future, but I’m not so sure. As it stands, it’s an amazing record. A testament to an incredible band that seemed to inexplicably fly under too many radars for way too long. I love the Hierophants, their music has been with me for a good chunk of my life. You deserve to love the Hierophants too. They’re a special band.
